GALA RECEPTION PLANNED MED. AREA NEWS
BUSCH-REISINGER MUSEUM
JAN 23, 1975
A performance on the famed Flentrop organ by E. Power Biggs - gallery talks by Harvard faculty - an exhibition of art treasures - will highlight a reception January 29 at the Busch-Reisinger Museum to be hosted by The Committee of Friends.
The reception will start at 7 p.m. and marks the launching of a major membership drive for the Busch-Reisinger. New and old supporters of the museum are invited as well as those interested in joining the Friends' organization. The volunteer Committee of Friends, chaired by Dr. Freddy Homburger, Swiss consul, is providing the impetus for the membership drive.
The gallery talks by Harvard faculty members, starting at 7:30 p.m. will include such subjects as the museum's late medieval sculpture, Renaissance paintings, porcelains and other art treasures - many displayed as if in their original surroundings.
Also on view will be the exhibition, "Craft into Art: 1880-1950" which includes displays from the famous Bauhaus Archives and drawings, prints, paintings and sculpture illustrating the development of 20th century art in Northern and Central Europe.
EXHIBITION OF ANCIENT CHINESE JADES
An exhibition of "Ancient Chinese Jades from the Grenville L. Winthrop Collection" will be held at the Fogg Art Museum January 22 through March 18.
The 630 pieces in the Winthrop Collection are said to be the finest single assemblage of archaic jades in the world and the exhibition at the Fogg marks the first time they will be on view together since the collection was bequeathed to the University in 1943.
The Chinese jades, dating from the Neolithic Period through the Han Dynasty illustrate both ritual and decorative uses of the hardest mineral known to the early Chinese. From the mysterious ritual pi disks and replicas of Bronze Age tools and weapons to elaborately fashioned buckles, belt-hooks and pendants, the collection contains some of the most important examples of Chinese lapidaries' achievements known today.
The exhibition marks the publication of a definitive catalogue, "Ancient Chinese Jades from the Grenville L. Winthrop Collection" by Max Loehr, curator emeritus of oriental art, assisted by Louisa G. Fitzgerald Huber.
Gallery talks by members of the museum's Oriental Art Department, will be given every Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. while the collection is on exhibition.
