Building Renovations:
The document highlights the need for financial support to maintain the museum's effectiveness, both in terms of staffing and building improvements.
The document discusses the need for an adequate endowment fund for a half-time curator at a museum, originally conceived as a teaching-curatorship with shared salary between the museum and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The current curator, appointed under this concept, found the museum budget insufficient and reduced his role to half-time to focus on the museum. He now proposes an endowed curatorship with a fund of $200,000 to secure the position and release funds for curatorial assistance, as the current staff is minimal and needs expansion for the museum to grow. Additionally, the curator highlights two important renovation needs: the installation of an elevator for better access, estimated to cost $60,000, and the conversion of the basement for displaying the Scandinavian collection, which has outgrown its current space.

The image shows a page from a document discussing the financial and operational needs of a museum. The text on the page is as follows:
"pressing one is an adequate endowment fund for a half-time curator. The curatorship was originally conceived by the University administration as a teaching-curatorship at the professorial level, one half of the salary to be paid from Museum funds and one half by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
The appointment of the present Curator conformed to this concept. It soon became apparent to him that the Museum budget could not possibly afford such an arrangement. The present salary for a full-time professor is $16,000. If the Museum paid one half of this, it would have no funds for any activities whatsoever. Hence, because he believed so strongly in the importance of the Museum, a few years ago the Curator requested to be put on a half-time basis. This reduced his teaching load and allowed him to devote almost all of his time to the work of the Museum. He is now approaching the retirement age and feels that funds should be available to compensate his successor on an adequate basis without crippling the finances of the Museum. This could be attained by an endowed curatorship at the professorial level. Such a fund should total $200,000. The yield from this fund would pay his salary and would release some funds for curatorial assistance, which is greatly needed. The present staff of the Museum consists of the Curator, paid on a quarter-time basis, one full-time secretary, two full-time men for cleaning and guarding, and a person who devotes a few hours per month to public education. Clearly, if the Museum is to maintain its present effectiveness and to grow, the staff must be increased.
The Curator then mentioned other needs. No important renovation to the building has been carried out since it was completed in 1922. Two projects are highly desirable to increase its effectiveness. The first is the construction of a combined passenger and freight elevator. This would serve the receiving and shipping room and would carry passengers to the lecture room on the top floor, which is now accessible to only the most hardy students and instructors. The estimated cost of such an elevator (including the car, machinery and the erection of a shaft) is $60,000.
The second item for improving the building is the conversion of some of the basement for the display of the Scandinavian collection. Due to the growth of collections, only a few examples of Scandinavian folk-art and of modern..."
The document highlights the need for increased funding and staffing to maintain and grow the museum's effectiveness, specifically mentioning the need for an endowment for a full-time curator and improvements to the building infrastructure.
The image shows an open book with a single typed page visible. The page is numbered "3" at the top and discusses the topic of endowment funds and salary arrangements for a museum curator, as well as the financial challenges faced. It mentions that the curatorship was originally designed as a half-time teaching position, with the salary shared between museum funds and the university's Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
The text explains that the current curator's salary is $16,000 for a full-time professor, which the museum budget cannot fully support. As a result, the curator requested to be paid half-time to allow more focus on museum work. It also discusses the need for an endowed fund of $200,000 to support a full-time curatorship, provide curatorial assistance, and maintain staff.
Additionally, the document mentions two needed building projects to improve museum operations: the construction of a combined passenger and freight elevator costing about $60,000 and the conversion of part of the basement for displaying a Scandinavian collection, highlighting the growth of collections and limited display space.
Overall, the page details financial, staffing, and facility issues related to running a museum effectively.
