The present exhibition offers an opportunity, rarely encountered outside the larger museums, to see and know Rembrandt as an etcher. It also provides an opportunity to note and to stress some aspects of that master which are either passed with brief notice or ignored. Instead, therefore, of repeating the information which is available in any number of books written in English, I shall attempt to bring out something more.

My plan is to write about the collector who assembled this exhibition; about the function of light and shade in Rembrandt; about the place of the artist as a representative of the baroque; about his development and his influence on other artists; about his work as illustration; about Rembrandt and sentimentalism; and about Rembrandt as a creator of universal values and symbols.

All this implies means to acquire valuable things. It also takes time, patience, persistence, and courage to wait and watch for the favorable moment, not to be put off with inferior impressions or less admirable states, to insist on the best and to gain it. This thought and energy might just as easily have been spent on other pursuits. For the relatively few who possess the means to acquire fine examples of Rembrandt's etchings, without a determined will to do so, the chances of success are unfavorable.

Now in such a situation, granted adequate means and a firm resolve, skilled, trained judgment must be summoned, for only those who risk their fortunes and their prestige on the accuracy of their judgment, can be expected to be able to give effective aid. In addition there is, of course, as in any competitive activity, the reward of triumphant emulation, the satisfaction of carrying off the longed-for prize, that which other collectors have desired and have had to yield to you.
